10 EASY ARITHMETIC TRICKS

Math can be terrifying for many people. This list will hopefully improve your general knowledge of mathematical tricks and your speed when you need to do math in your head.
Galoisfieldlib
1. The 11 Times Trick
We all know the trick when multiplying by ten – add 0 to the end of the number, but did you know there is an equally easy trick for multiplying a two digit number by 11? This is it:
Take the original number and imagine a space between the two digits (in this example we will use 52:
5_2
Now add the two numbers together and put them in the middle:
5_(5+2)_2
That is it – you have the answer: 572.
If the numbers in the middle add up to a 2 digit number, just insert the second number and add 1 to the first:
9_(9+9)_9
(9+1)_8_9
10_8_9
1089 – It works every time.
2. Quick Square
If you need to square a 2 digit number ending in 5, you can do so very easily with this trick. Mulitply the first digit by itself + 1, and put 25 on the end. That is all!
252 = (2x(2+1)) & 25
2 x 3 = 6
625
3. Multiply by 5
Most people memorize the 5 times tables very easily, but when you get in to larger numbers it gets more complex – or does it? This trick is super easy.
Take any number, then divide it by 2 (in other words, halve the number). If the result is whole, add a 0 at the end. If it is not, ignore the remainder and add a 5 at the end. It works everytime:
2682 x 5 = (2682 / 2) & 5 or 0
2682 / 2 = 1341 (whole number so add 0)
13410
Let’s try another:
5887 x 5
2943.5 (fractional number (ignore remainder, add 5)
29435
22189271
4. Multiply by 9
This one is simple – to multiple any number between 1 and 9 by 9 hold both hands in front of your face – drop the finger that corresponds to the number you are multiplying (for example 9×3 – drop your third finger) – count the fingers before the dropped finger (in the case of 9×3 it is 2) then count the numbers after (in this case 7) – the answer is 27.
5. Multiply by 4
This is a very simple trick which may appear obvious to some, but to others it is not. The trick is to simply multiply by two, then multiply by two again:
58 x 4 = (58 x 2) + (58 x 2) = (116) + (116) = 232
6. Calculate a Tip
If you need to leave a 15% tip, here is the easy way to do it. Work out 10% (divide the number by 10) – then add that number to half its value and you have your answer:
15% of $25 = (10% of 25) + ((10% of 25) / 2)
$2.50 + $1.25 = $3.75
7. Tough Multiplication
If you have a large number to multiply and one of the numbers is even, you can easily subdivide to get to the answer:
32 x 125, is the same as:
16 x 250 is the same as:
8 x 500 is the same as:
4 x 1000 = 4,000
1000-Abacus
8. Dividing by 5
Dividing a large number by five is actually very simple. All you do is multiply by 2 and move the decimal point:
195 / 5
Step1: 195 * 2 = 390
Step2: Move the decimal: 39.0 or just 39
2978 / 5
step 1: 2978 * 2 = 5956
Step2: 595.6
9. Subtracting from 1,000
To subtract a large number from 1,000 you can use this basic rule: subtract all but the last number from 9, then subtract the last number from 10:
1000
-648
step1: subtract 6 from 9 = 3
step2: subtract 4 from 9 = 5
step3: subtract 8 from 10 = 2
answer: 352
10. Assorted Multiplication Rules
Multiply by 5: Multiply by 10 and divide by 2.
Multiply by 6: Sometimes multiplying by 3 and then 2 is easy.
Multiply by 9: Multiply by 10 and subtract the original number.
Multiply by 12: Multiply by 10 and add twice the original number.
Multiply by 13: Multiply by 3 and add 10 times original number.
Multiply by 14: Multiply by 7 and then multiply by 2
Multiply by 15: Multiply by 10 and add 5 times the original number, as above.
Multiply by 16: You can double four times, if you want to. Or you can multiply by 8 and then by 2.
Multiply by 17: Multiply by 7 and add 10 times original number.
Multiply by 18: Multiply by 20 and subtract twice the original number (which is obvious from the first step).
Multiply by 19: Multiply by 20 and subtract the original number.
Multiply by 24: Multiply by 8 and then multiply by 3.
Multiply by 27: Multiply by 30 and subtract 3 times the original number (which is obvious from the first step).
Multiply by 45: Multiply by 50 and subtract 5 times the original number (which is obvious from the first step).
Multiply by 90: Multiply by 9 (as above) and put a zero on the right.
Multiply by 98: Multiply by 100 and subtract twice the original number.
Multiply by 99: Multiply by 100 and subtract the original number.
Bonus: Percentages
Yanni in comment 23 gave an excellent tip for working out percentages, so I have taken the liberty of duplicating it here:
Find 7 % of 300. Sound Difficult?
Percents: First of all you need to understand the word “Percent.” The first part is PER , as in 10 tricks per listverse page. PER = FOR EACH. The second part of the word is CENT, as in 100. Like Century = 100 years. 100 CENTS in 1 dollar… etc. Ok… so PERCENT = For Each 100.
So, it follows that 7 PERCENT of 100, is 7. (7 for each hundred, of only 1 hundred).
8 % of 100 = 8. 35.73% of 100 = 35.73
But how is that useful??
Back to the 7% of 300 question. 7% of the first hundred is 7. 7% of 2nd hundred is also 7, and yep, 7% of the 3rd hundred is also 7. So 7+7+7 = 21.
If 8 % of 100 is 8, it follows that 8% of 50 is half of 8 , or 4.
Break down every number that’s asked into questions of 100, if the number is less then 100, then move the decimal point accordingly.
EXAMPLES:
8%200 = ? 8 + 8 = 16.
8%250 = ? 8 + 8 + 4 = 20.
8%25 = 2.0 (Moving the decimal back).
15%300 = 15+15+15 =45.
15%350 = 15+15+15+7.5 = 52.5
Also it’s usefull to know that you can always flip percents, like 3% of 100 is the same as 100% of 3.
35% of 8 is the same as 8% of 35.

How to Make Drop-Down Labels Menu in Blogger?

If you host your blog on the Blogger (blogspot) platform, and you have significant number of labels on your sidebar, you might be looking for a suitable solution to show them, but also save the expensive space for other elements. These two tasks can be achieved by using the option of displaying your labels in a simple drop-down menu. Many bloggers already use drop-down option for long lists of labels (categories), which minimizes clutter and enables information to be displayed in the sidebar neatly.
While Blogger offers a dropdown menu option for the Archives widget, you will not be able to find an option to do the same for your labels. In this post, we will review two ways you can use to convert your regular Label list into a drop-down list.

Method 1

1. Template Backup. As usual, when you just think about making any changes to the template code, it is strongly recommended to make a complete back up of your existing template. This ensures you can easily roll back and restore your current, working template if you make any mistake.
To make a back up of your current template, go to Layout > Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard and click the “Download Full Template” link near the top of the page. This will offer the option to save your current Blogger template as an XML file to your local computer. Be sure to save this file in a location you can easily find later.
2. Ensure you have a “Labels” widget in your Blogger template. Ifyou do not have a Labels widget activated in your template, go to Layout>Page Elements and add a Labels widget using the “Add a Gadget” link above your sidebar. Definitely, your posts should be labeled as well to transfer the related content to the activated widget.
3. Go to Layout > Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard. This time, DO NOTcheck the "Expand Widget Templates" checkbox!
4. Search for the following code (note that the name of the label in your template might be slightly different):<b:widget id='Label1' locked='false' title='Labels' type='Label'>
5. Replace the above code, with this:<b:widget id='Label1' locked='false' title='Labels' type='Label'>
<b:includable id='main'>
<b:if cond='data:title'>
<h2><data:title/></h2>
</b:if>
<div class='widget-content'>
<br/>

<select onchange='location=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;' style='width:200px'>
<option>Labels</option>
<b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>
<option expr:value='data:label.url'><data:label.name/>
</option>
</b:loop>
</select>

<b:include name='quickedit'/>
</div>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>
6. Modifying the Widget. To alter the phrase “Choose a label to view” which is visible when the drop down menu is contracted, you will need to go to the Layout>Edit HTML page of your Blogger dashboard and check the “Expand widget templates” box. Then search for this phrase in your template code. Simply alter the wording of this phrase to something more suitable for your blog, being careful not to alter any of the surrounding code.
To clarify, here is the line of code where adjustments will be made. The text which can be altered is highlighted in red:<select onchange='location=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;'><option>Choose a Label to View</option><b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>

Method 2As you understand, the first steps of the code modification will be similar to the method 1, so I will skip the introduction, which you need to backup the template first before doing any modifications.
3. Go to Layout > Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard. This time, CHECKthe "Expand Widget Templates" checkbox!
4. Now look for the following code in your template

<b:widget id='Label1' locked='false' title='Labels' type='Label'>
<b:includable id='main'>
<b:if cond='data:title'>
<h2><data:title/></h2>
</b:if>
<div class='widget-content'>

 <ul>
   <b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>
     <li>
       <b:if cond='data:blog.url == data:label.url'>
         <data:label.name/>
       <b:else/>
         <a expr:href='data:label.url'><data:label.name/></a>
       </b:if>
       (<data:label.count/>)
     </li>
   </b:loop>
   </ul>
<b:include name='quickedit'/>
</div>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

5.
Note that you need to replace only the part of the displayed code IN BLUE. All the remaining text is provided for easy reference. So, replace the text IN BLUE with the text IN RED below:

<br />
<select onchange='location=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;'>
<option>Select a label</option>
<b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>
   <option expr:value='data:label.url'><data:label.name/>
      (<data:label.count/>)
   </option>
</b:loop>
</select>

No matter, which method you choose, at the end of the performed modification save the template and back it up with a new name. Do not overwrite the backup file you created at the beginning, since you want to try the option for some time and decide you do not see any problems or performance drawbacks.

CHANGING THE START BUTTON TEXT

This tutorial will walk you through how to modify system files in order to change the text that is displayed on the start menu’s “start” button.
NOTE: The steps outlined in this tutorial are to be followed at your own risk. We have tested it and it does work, but if you do something wrong your machine may become inoperable. I am doing this on a Windows XP Professional machine with Service Pack 2. There are no difference between professional and home for this tutorial. There are differences depending on the theme you are using. If something were to go wrong, simply go into safe mode by pressing F8 during boot and select Safe Mode. Then go into the registry and change our Shell value back to regular “explorer.exe”.
To complete this tutorial we will need to use a tool called a Hex Editor and/or a Resource Editor. These tools allow us to modify files that have already been compiled into DLL’s or EXE’s. A very good one to do this, that is free, is Resource Hacker and can be acquired by going to ResHackers Website (http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/). Scroll down on the page until you see the link to download the file as below:
Changing_start_menu_text_01
Changing_start_menu_text_02
Save the file to Disk once the download screen appears. Once the download has completed, open the file (which is zipped and you will need to unzip it before use).
Changing_start_menu_text_03
You should now have the above file on your desktop (or wherever you extracted the files to).
Changing_start_menu_text_04
You should see the above files within the folder. ResHacker.exe is the executable that we will be running. Now we need to prep things for the image swap. We will be modifying the “Explorer.exe” file located in your Windows directory, normally “C:\Windows”. Let’s open the files by selecting file and then open.
Changing_start_menu_text_05
We now want to navigate to our Windows directory and double-click on explorer.exe to open the file as shown below:
Changing_start_menu_text_06

We now have the file open in our tool and you ResHacker window should look like the following:

Changing_start_menu_text_07
The objects that we are going to be modifying are located under the string table section and under the folders 37 and 38. Expand them and your reshacker should now look like this:
Changing_start_menu_text_08
The reason we need to modify two of these files is that there are two strings for the start button, one which has classic windows style and one for Windows XP styles. These are shown below:
Changing_start_menu_text_09
If you select the “1033” option in the 37 folder, you will get the following in the right pane which you can see shows “start” on the line that is labeled 578. This instance of the “start” text is for the Windows XP:
Changing_start_menu_text_10
If you select the “1033” option in the 38 folder you will see the following in the right pane which shows you “Start” on the line labeled 595. This instance of start if for the classic view.
Changing_start_menu_text_11
Once you start changing the text in the 1033 option in the 37 folder you will notice that the Compile Script button lights up as below:
Changing_start_menu_text_12
Once you type what you want click on this button. If it completes successfully the button will become greyed out again. Repeat this step for the 1033 in the 38 folder as well. Keep in mind that you do NOT have to make them the same thing. Also, they do not have to be limited to a certain number of letters and Windows will re-size the button to fit whatever text is placed there. Out next step is to prep where we are going to save our newly created file. For weird reasons you can not rename this file and place it in the same folder. You have to create a folder for it specifically, or place it in another system folder. I am going to create a folder in the Windows directory called “start” as shown here:
Changing_start_menu_text_13
You can now go back to ResHacker and select File and then Save As:
Changing_start_menu_text_14
Now navigate to our “start” folder located in C:\Windows\ and save the file as explorer.exe. as shown here:
Changing_start_menu_text_15
Now we can close ResHacker and start to tell our system where to get the new file from. To do this we will need to access RedEdit and modify the registry a little bit. To do this goto to Start and the select run and type RegEdit as shows below:
Changing_start_menu_text_16
Once the registry editor opens up, you need to navigate to the following Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Once you select the WinLogon folder, the right pane of the editor should look like this:
Changing_start_menu_text_17
Scroll down in the right pane and look for the Key named Shell as shown:
Changing_start_menu_text_18
Double-click on the key to bring up the window to modify its entry. Type the following in the box and click on OK.
Changing_start_menu_text_19
Note that I did intend to use the forward slash. Please ensure you use the correct slash. Now you should be able to reboot your computer and see the effects of what you have done. You should see what you type no matter which version of styles you are using (To change styles – right-click on the desktop and select properties and go to the appearance tab). Here is the finished result:
